What PRP is

Natural Hair Regrowth Using Your Body’s Own Healing Power

PRP is an autologous preparation. We collect a small blood sample, process it in a centrifuge and administer the prepared platelet-rich fraction to selected scalp areas.

Researchers have studied whether PRP may support the environment around viable follicles and improve hair density in certain forms of hair loss. It does not create new follicles or restore a completely bald area.

Our approach: we assess your pattern of thinning, scalp condition, health information and previous treatments before recommending a package.

Clinical responsibility

Who assesses and administers PRP?

PRP at DrHairs is provided within a physician-supervised standard of care. Before treatment, our clinical team reviews your hair-loss concerns, scalp condition, relevant health information and suitability.

We do not present PRP as a universal solution. If your presentation requires further medical investigation or another pathway appears more appropriate, we explain that before asking you to purchase a package.

  • The provider’s professional designation and role
  • The preparation process being used
  • Why PRP is being recommended
  • The proposed number and timing of sessions
  • Potential side effects, limitations and alternatives
  • How progress will be monitored

Supported

Hair density and hair-loss reduction

A 2025 meta-analysis found moderate evidence that PRP may improve hair density and reduce hair loss in selected patients.

Not established

A significant overall increase in thickness

The same review did not find a significant overall improvement in hair thickness.

Important limitation

PRP protocols are not identical

Preparation, activation, composition, treatment schedules and outcome measurements vary between studies and clinics.

Your appointment

How PRP hair treatment works

01

Assessment

We review your thinning pattern, scalp, health information and goals.

02

Blood collection

A small sample is drawn, similar to a routine blood test.

03

Preparation

The sample is processed to prepare the platelet-rich fraction.

04

Scalp treatment

PRP is administered to the selected treatment areas.

05

Aftercare

We explain washing, activity and scalp-care instructions.

06

Progress review

We assess response over time rather than after one session.

Responsible candidacy

Who may be suitable for PRP?

PRP may be considered when viable follicles remain and the pattern of thinning is suitable for a non-surgical approach.

  • Early or moderate pattern thinning
  • A widening part with viable follicles
  • Reduced density rather than a completely bald area
  • Realistic expectations and willingness to attend follow-up

When we may postpone treatment

We may recommend further assessment, postpone PRP or advise against it when:

  • Hair loss is sudden, patchy or rapidly progressing
  • The scalp is painful, inflamed, infected or actively bleeding
  • A scarring hair-loss condition is suspected
  • The treatment area appears to have no viable follicles
  • A relevant blood or platelet disorder is present
  • Medication may affect bleeding, clotting or platelet function
  • An untreated health issue may be contributing
  • Expectations cannot reasonably be achieved with PRP

Do not discontinue prescribed medication unless the prescribing healthcare professional specifically advises you to do so.

Hair and scalp assessment before PRP treatment

Realistic outcomes

Results develop gradually

PRP is assessed over months, not days. If you respond, changes in shedding or visible density may become easier to evaluate between three and six months.

We use consistent progress documentation where appropriate. If continued treatment is unlikely to provide reasonable value, the plan should be reconsidered.

What influences the outcome?

Type and duration of lossViable folliclesScalp conditionPreparation protocolTreatment scheduleBiological responseContinued hair loss
Days 1–3Temporary redness or tenderness may occur.
Months 1–3Some patients notice changes in shedding.
Months 3–6Visible response may become easier to assess.
6+ monthsReview whether maintenance is justified.

Patient safety

Side effects and limitations

Because PRP comes from your own blood, it may have a lower allergy risk than some external substances. However, autologous does not mean risk-free.

Possible temporary effects

Pain, tenderness, redness, swelling, bruising, itching, headache, pinpoint bleeding or light-headedness.

Important clinical risks

Infection, worsening irritation, no meaningful response and the possible need for maintenance treatment.

What PRP cannot do

Create new follicles, replace permanently destroyed follicles or guarantee increased density or thickness.

After your appointment

PRP aftercare

Your individual instructions take priority over general online advice. Depending on your treatment protocol, you may need to temporarily avoid:

Touching or rubbing treated areasHarsh scalp productsHair colouring or chemical processingStrenuous exerciseSwimming, saunas or steam roomsProlonged direct sun exposure

Different treatments, different purposes

PRP versus minoxidil versus hair transplant

These options are not interchangeable. The appropriate pathway depends on your diagnosis, stage of loss, health information and goals.

PRP

Non-surgical scalp treatment

Uses a preparation from your own blood. Usually involves multiple appointments and a variable response.

Medication

Minoxidil

May be considered for selected patterns. Requires appropriate advice, consistent use and review of possible side effects.

Surgery

Hair transplant

Relocates suitable donor follicles into selected areas of established loss and requires adequate donor hair.

Individual situations

PRP for women, postpartum shedding and after transplant

01

Women with thinning hair

PRP may be considered for selected women, but hormonal changes, nutrition, medication, illness and other health factors may contribute. Where these are suspected, further evaluation may be more appropriate first.

02

Postpartum shedding

Postpartum shedding does not automatically mean PRP is necessary. It may improve as the hair-growth cycle recovers. Persistent or concerning shedding should be assessed, particularly when breastfeeding or other health factors are relevant.

03

After a hair transplant

PRP may be discussed as an adjunct in selected cases. It does not replace surgical planning, graft handling, donor management or aftercare. Timing should be coordinated with the team managing your recovery.

Canadian regulatory context

What Health Canada says about PRP

Health Canada has explained that PRP prepared from a patient and administered back to the same patient in a single procedure falls within provincially or territorially regulated clinical practice when the applicable conditions are met.

Its communication also noted that Health Canada had not reviewed the safety, efficacy and quality of PRP for therapeutic uses at the time of publication. PRP should therefore not be marketed as guaranteed or universally effective.

Common questions

PRP hair treatment FAQs

Clear answers about cost, sessions, candidacy and realistic outcomes.

How much does PRP hair treatment cost?+

A three-session package ranges from $499 to $599. A six-session package ranges from $899 to $999. Your initial assessment is free, and your complete cost is confirmed before treatment begins.

Is the price for one session?+

No. These are package prices. The $499–$599 range covers three sessions, while $899–$999 covers six sessions.

How many PRP sessions will I need?+

The number depends on your pattern of thinning, scalp condition, goals and response. We do not automatically recommend the longest package.

Does PRP regrow permanently lost hair?+

No. PRP cannot create new follicles or restore areas where follicles have been permanently destroyed. It is considered mainly where viable follicles remain.

Does PRP increase hair thickness?+

A 2025 review of 43 randomized trials found moderate evidence for improved hair density and reduced hair loss, but no significant overall improvement in hair thickness.

Is there downtime after PRP?+

Downtime is generally limited, although temporary redness, tenderness, swelling, bruising or pinpoint bleeding may occur.

Can women receive PRP?+

Selected women may be candidates, depending on the type and cause of thinning. Assessment should come before cosmetic treatment.

Is PRP suitable for postpartum shedding?+

Not automatically. Postpartum shedding can improve naturally. Persistent or concerning shedding should be assessed before PRP is selected.

Is PRP treatment painful?+

You may feel pinching, pressure or temporary tenderness during scalp injections. Individual sensitivity varies, and we explain what to expect before treatment.

Can PRP stop future hair loss?+

PRP cannot guarantee that progressive hair loss will stop. Pattern thinning and other contributing factors may continue, so a longer-term management plan may be discussed.

Can PRP be combined with a hair transplant?+

PRP may be discussed as an adjunct in selected cases, but it does not replace surgical planning, graft handling, donor management or appropriate aftercare.

Who should not receive PRP?+

Treatment may be postponed or declined when an active scalp infection, relevant blood disorder, medication concern, unexplained loss or another clinical contraindication is present.

Is PRP covered by OHIP?+

PRP for cosmetic hair restoration is generally not covered by OHIP. Confirm any private insurance eligibility directly with your insurer.

Do you offer PRP at both locations?+

Yes. We provide PRP assessments and treatment planning through our Markham and North York clinics.
